What Keyboard Should I Buy?

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

One of the most common questions I get is what keyboard should I buy either for myself or for my child who is starting piano lessons. With all the choices out there today, the process can be very overwhelming and frustrating. In order to make the best decision possible I will begin by asking a few basic questions that I encourage you to answer before you begin your search.

QUESTION 1- HOW MUCH DO I WANT TO PAY?

Whether you are thinking of buying an acoustic piano or an electronic one, how much you are able/willing to pay will determine where you start your search.

Acoustics

As a rule, acoustic uprights and grand pianos are going to hit the pocketbook allot heavier than electronic keyboards. For beginning students, a used acoustic upright piano that has all the keys working, has a good soundboard and can hold a standard tuning, will generally start around $500 and up on Ebay.. Pianos that are good looking "furniture" are going to cost at least $1000.

Electronic

If you are a tighter budget, you can find a brand new 88 key electronic digital piano for 300 to 500 at online stores like Musicians Friends. I recommend this option for beginning students because they have all the features for learning the basics of piano playing; there is less money invested; and they can be easily resold online if the student loses interest in the instrument.
